Twenty years ago, it seemed much easier to ignore the purchasing power of ethnic markets. With over twenty on million Americans classified in the ethnic market, this question is being revisited, only on a larger scale. What can be gained by “talking one’s talk” and learning more about how each culture “walks its walk”?

• 21.3 million Americans are classified as “limited English proficient,” a 52 percent increase from 1990, and more than double the 1980 total.*

• One in twenty five American households are Linguistically isolated, meaning that no one in the household older than age 14 can speak English.*

Native languages can be a barrier to safety. Non-English speaking workers throughout the country are at greater risk of serious injury on the job than English speaking workers. OSHA’s requirements mandate that employers establish ongoing communications with non-English speaking workers.
